The sport painting titled "Golden Bear: Jack Nicklaus" was recently completed.

painting of jack nicklaus

Jack Nicklaus is widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time.  Nicklaus achieved 18 Major PGA Tour victories spanning 25 years- a mark that is the singular focus of Tiger Woods.

This painting captures the grit and concentration that came to define him.  The painting has a red color palette to reflect his fiery spirit in another Master's victory.  His expression and furrowed brow were classic expressions to his character and will.

What are fine art giclee reproductions ?

A giclee (zhee-CLAY), is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity, high tech reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork. Also, since many artists now paint only digitally, there is no "original" that can be hung on a wall. Giclees solve that problem, while creating a whole new vibrant medium for art.

Giclees can be printed on any number of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to vinyl, to transparent acetates. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in nearly every way. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually 'continuous tone', rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper.

Since giclee printers can use media in rolls, large print sizes are available, limited only by the length and width of the roll. Billboard sizes are possible. Giclees are typically sold by the square inch or square foot.

Lithography uses tiny dots of four colors--cyan, magenta, yellow and black--to fool the eye into seeing various hues and shades. Colors are "created" by printing different size dots of these four colors.

Giclees use inkjet technology, but far more sophisticated than your desktop printer. The process employs six colors--light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow and black (somteimes TWO blacks)--of lightfast (fade resistant,) pigmented inks and finer, more numerous, replaceable printheads resulting in a wider color gamut, and the ability to use various media to print on. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the page to create truer shades and hues.

They are priced midway between original art and regular limited edition lithographs. Limited edition litho prints are usually produced in editions of 500-1000 or more, all at once; but giclees rarely exceed 50-100 high-quality reproductions, one at a time.

Giclees were originally developed as a proofing system for traditional lithographic printing presses, but it soon became apparent that the presses were having a hard time delivering the quality and brilliant color of the giclee proofs. Giclees evolved into the new darlings of the art world. They are coveted by collectors for their fidelity and quality, and desired by galleries and artists alike because they don't have to be produced in huge quantities with their large layout of capital and storage.

In addition, Giclees are produced directly from a digital file, (which can be remotely uploaded,) saving generations of detail-robbing negatives and printing plates used with traditional litho printing.

What is your satisfaction and return policy?

Purchasing art on-line offers many advantages to the purchaser, most notably a favorable price relative to a gallery.  However, not seeing the finished piece in person to see the detail quality can cause some level of hesitation in committing to a purchase.  Complicating the quality issue is that computer monitors are not necessarily accurately calibrated to present color exactly the same as in printed form.

My policy is to make sure you are 100% completely satisfied.  Simply stated, I will refund your money within 5 business days of delivery if the painting does not meet your expectations.

How long until delivery of the artwork?

I can provide a rough estimate of delivery within 1-2 weeks for canvas and about 1 week for paper prints.  Canvas turnaround includes any enhanced application of texture glazing and painted highlights I may add for vibrancy to the finished work.  To the extent I have inventory on-hand, shipment can occur within days.  I will promptly notify you if a delay is expected.

How can I review detail close-ups?

Reviewing an on-line image of a painting will give you a very good representation of the finished piece when viewed several feet away.  However, the character of art is often revealed in the texture and brush strokes when seen closer.  If you wish to see this level of detail, I can e-mail to you a section of the painting at 100% resolution.  The images on-line are too small if you attempt to do this.

What is meant by image size?

If you visit the Catalogue link, you will see the typical image sizes for each painting.  The image size refers to the size of the actual painted image or said differently, the image size excludes any surrounding border added for matte/framing convenience.  For canvas, an additional 2 inch border is added for stretching over a frame.  The paper prints include a 1 inch border around each image (example: 16x20 image will be a print sheet size of 18x22 with a 1" border).

Can I order different sizes from the catalog/gallery offers?

In general, I try to be flexible within reason.  I can get prints produced for any image size less than the maximum size.  However, I cannot change the horizontal and vertical proportionality of the image size to meet some standard framing size.  Standard frame sizes can often be achieved with the surrounding matting process done at a quality frame shop.

What can I expect from my giclee print ?

Your Giclee print is reproduced with the finest, economical materials to ensure quality to an original painting.  A minimum 2" canvas border is added to the image size for stretching over a frame.   (Note: A canvas is shipped un-stretched.  The appearance is significantly enhanced when stretched over a stretcher-strip frame and even more so when finally framed for display.  I sometimes get requests for returns even before the customer has visited a quality framing shop.)

Giclee prints are also available on enhanced textured watercolor paper.  All paper prints will have a 1" border added to the image size dimensions for framing convenience. This watercolor paper is the best at capturing detail and color variations.  The quality becomes apparent when framed under glass.  All canvas and watercolor prints include a limited edition certificate of authenticity and count toward the series of fifty or less unless noted.  Both canvas and prints have a stated indoor longevity, based on the ink dyes and lamination, of over 75 years.

What is the price for artwork and size options?

To determine the pricing for artwork, simply take the print area of each work multiplied by the square inch cost.  An example below, clarifies the pricing structure.

The catalog shows the typical image size many customers find appealing on standard walls.  Smaller or larger sizes are available by simply scaling the vertical and horizontal dimensions by the same percentage amount.  For example, if a  catalogue image is 30x20", smaller dimensions you might prefer might be 24x16" or the height/width catalogue image both multiplied by 80%.  All sizes of interest not shown in the galleries must be agreed upon to ensure feasibility.

NOTE: Artwork is delivered in shipping tubes unframed.

What is an artist enhanced canvas giclee ?

An enhanced giclee is the closest resemblance possible to an original painting.  The fidelity and vibrancy of these prints is further enhanced with the addition of simulated brushstrokes in the finishing coat and hand-painted highlights.  These details emphasize light and add pure color to the drama of the artwork.  I typically will use acrylic paints to give the painting the "pop-and-wow" factor.  In many ways, these individual details make each piece unique and an original piece in themselves.

If you desire these unique elements to differentiate and increase the value to your giclee, there is an additional charge of $60.
