This painting was inspired by the intangible quality great football running backs possess- the cut back. The ability of vision and physical prowess to make instant decision on the field is often not fully appreciated by fans until they see the instant-replay in slow motion. I wanted to capture that inflection point of cutting back against the grain, leaving defenders helpless to make the same adjustments. Everything in the painting’s composition has a right slant and movement except the running back lurching toward the left, providing a compelling visual impact.
